Edmond Lavender was born in 1885 to George Lavender and his wife Emily. The sixth of nine children, he had four brothers and four sisters and grew up on Little Blagdon Farm, West Barnes Lane. By 1911 he was single and living in Claremont Cottage, Burlington Road and his occupation was shown as “contractor”.

He joined the Somerset Light Infantry and the 8th Battalion was sent to France in early September 1915 and by 13th September the Division was concentrated in the Tilques. They took part in the Battle of Loos two weeks later. Edmund survived this but was killed in action on 19 December 1915 and buried in Chapelle-d'Armentières New Military Cemetery. This cemetery was used for three months. One grave in Row C was brought in from Roubaix Communal Cemetery in 1927. There are now over 70 World War I casualties commemorated at this site.
