Additional Information
George was born in Mitcham c 1888. From the 1901 Census, when he was 13, his family was living 7 Phipps Bridge Road, in the parish of Christchurch. At this time, this road extended to the junction with Church Road, Christchurch Road and Western Road. This part of Phipps Bridge Road is now known as Liberty Avenue. His parents, George, a plasterer, and Martha, had ten children and George Jnr grew up with an older brother, Daniel, an older sister Florence and seven younger siblings, Clara, Albert, Lilian, William, Alfred, Martha and Bessie.
George joined the Bedfordshire Regiment sometime in 1908 and by the 1911 census he was serving in Bermuda and Jamaica whilst all his brothers and sisters were still living at home which was now 5 Bath Road, Mitcham.
George served on the Western Front but was discharged from the Army as unfit on 2 April 1916, after a gas attack, and he died on 11 February 1917 of consumption brought on by the gas. He is buried in Mitcham Burial Ground, Church Road. The local paper reported his death but called him George Arthur Adaway.
