Clarence Tapscott Cockle who was born during the last quarter of 1897, was the fourth son of Henry George and Bessie Cockle. By profession, Henry George was a licensed pub victualler.

The 1901 Census reveals that George and Bessie were living at 159 Merton Road with their 5 sons and 3 domestic servants
.
At the time of the 1911 census, Bessie and George had been married for 20 years with Bessie having given birth to 8 children with one child dying in infancy.
Temperance Bond, their cook was still employed by the family assisted by 22 year old Constance who was employed as a house maid according to the 1911 Census.

Clarence enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company as a Private. He became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Suffolk Regiment on 19 December 1916 and was listed as missing on the 10th September 1918 presumed killed in action.

His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot war memorial in Flanders, Belgium.

Probate of his estate was left to his father Henry George Cockle, gentleman.
