Additional Information

Otto Carl August Wendt was born in Prussia but came to England, married and had three children, Leslie, George and Dorothy. He was living at 113 Lennard Road, Beckenham, Kent and was aged 42 when he took the Oath of Allegiance and was formally naturalised on 1 November 1989.
The family moved to the Kingston area and sadly Otto died in 1909.

George went to Clare House School Beckenham and then to Kings College Wimbledon. By the 1911 census the family, his mother Annie and his brother and sister were living at 20 Wilton Crescent, Wimbledon.

When he left school, George was employed by the Eastern Telegraph Company before joining the Artist’s Rifles. He was later transferred to the 1st/13th Battalion of the London Regiment. He fought in the Battle of the Somme and, given the date of his death, it is likely that he was killed during the battle of Thiepval Ridge which took place between 26th-30th September 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, in St Andrew’s Church, Wimbledon and on a memorial at St Levan, Cornwall.

The Probate register shows that he left his mother £110 12s.
