Edmund was born in Ireland on 10 November, 1865. He was the son of Frederick and Maria Evelegh. His father was Colonel of the Royal Marines and a veteran of the Crimean War. Edmund had at least 11 siblings. His oldest brother, Frederick John, had a son called Rosslyn who was also killed during the First World War.
As a child, Edmund lived in Kensington and was sent to school in Plumstead. His family moved to Wimbledon c.1876, initially living at Thornton Lodge and then 5 Lansdowne Road. They remained there certainly until his father’s death in 1897. (His mother died in 1881.)
Following in his father’s footsteps, Edmund joined the Royal Marines and lived in Southampton and Chatham before the war. By 1896 he was married to Ada Gwyn and the couple had one child, a son named Edmund (who was killed in the Second World War).
Edmund Snr was a fine marine and was twice mentioned in despatches. He was killed on 14 July 1915 during the Dardanelles campaign. He is commemorated at Wimbledon Parish Church.
