Additional Information

William Buckle was the son of William a musician and Janie (nee Ingledew). They had married at St. Peter in Leeds on 19th August 1885. Their son William was born in Leeds on 3rd May 1887 and baptised at the same church on 21st August 1887.

In the census of 1891 William aged 3 is living with his parents and two younger sisters, Florence aged 2 and Ethel aged one at 21 Roundhay Street Leeds in Yorkshire. His father William (snr) aged 33 is listed as a musician – Cornet Player.

William’s sister Ethel died in July 1891. Her death was almost immediately followed by the birth of another sister named Frances. Two further siblings were also born in Liverpool: Frank in 1895 and Annie in early 1896.

By October of 1896 the family had moved to London as records show that William aged 9 and Florence aged 8 were registered at Brook Green School in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Another sibling named Fred was born in 1900, his birth was registered in Brixton.

In the census of 1901 the family were now living in Battersea at 27 Winifred Grove. William (snr) and his wife Janie were listed with their six children: William 13, Florence 12, Frances 10, Frank 6, Annie 4 and Fred aged one. William Snr is again listed as a Musician – Cornet player.

By 1903 the family appears to have moved again, records show that another sibling named Alice was born in Brighton.

In April 1910 William (snr) died aged 52 his death was registered in Brighton.

By 1911 William aged 23 was working as a fitter’s mate and listed as a boarder living at 131 High Street, Tooting, a house with 5 rooms. The head of the house hold was a Henry Coasby who was employed as a Kitchen Porter at an Asylum.

Meanwhile William’s mother Janie is living at 178 Elm Grove in Brighton, a house with 5 rooms. She is listed as living by private means with 3 children: Annie, Fred and Alice. Also living with the family was a lodger called Leonard Mcquillan aged 21 working as a Butchers Assistant. Of Janie's ten children three had died.

When war broke out William was aged 27. He enlisted in Wimbledon and served firstly with the Hertfordshire Regiment, then transferred to the Essex Regiment A Company 11th Battalion.

The Essex Regiment 11th Battalion proceeded to France in August 1915 landing in Boulogne. In 1917 they were in action at Hill 70 and at Cambrai.

William died in France on 20th December 1917 aged 30 and buried at Mory Abbey Military Cemetery. He is also remembered on a memorial at Christ Church Colliers Wood.
