Tom Cook was born in Pimlico in April 1888. His family lived at 71 Grosvenor Road, Westminster . His father, who was also named Tom, was a police officer and came originally from Newark in Nottinghamshire. His mother Ellen was born in Pimlico and Tom had a sister Clara, who was a year older then he was and a younger brother, Walter.
By the time of the 1911 census, the family had moved to 6 Marlborough Road in Merton. Tom Snr was now working for the Inland Revenue as a messenger and Tom Jnr was a postman.
Tom Jnr enlisted with the 8th Battalion London Regiment Post Office Rifles, service number 2099. His Battalion were sent to France in March 1915 and fought at the Battle of Aubers Ridge on 9 May, the Battle of Festubert a week later and the Battle of Loos at the end of September 1915. The final action he would have seen was at The Hohenzollern Redoubt – 13 October 1915.
Tom died on 2 November 1915 and was buried at Dud Corner, Loos. He is commemorated in Christ Church Colliers Wood.
