Charles was born in January 1892 to George and Jane Dalton and baptised at Christchurch Colliers Wood on 31 January 1892. He had an older brother George and two younger sisters, Emma and Ellen.
His childhood home was 18 Waterfall Cottages, Waterfall Road and when he left school he became a fence maker.
At the age of 19 he married Maud Harriet Bullen in Christchurch on 24 December 1911.
He enlisted in the 8th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment in Wimbledon and died of wounds in France on 29 June 1916.
