Thomas Boots was born in Wimbledon c.1898. In 1911, aged 13, he was living with his parents George and Elizabeth Boots and sister Ellen(10) at Holmbrook, 3 Edna Road, Bushey Mead, Merton. Also present at the same address at the time of the census was Elizabeth’s sister-in-law Mary Sexton (named as a servant) and her daughter Elsie Sexton(7). George Boots was a jobbing gardener.

Thomas originally enrolled in the 10th East Surrey Regiment but was then posted to the 2nd/2nd Batallion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). He was killed in action in the Western European Theatre of France and Flanders. At the time of his death his mother was living at 30, Vernon Avenue, Raynes Park, Wimbledon. His father had died.

Corporal Boots is buried in Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bret on the Somme. His grave reference is Vll B.6. His gravestone is inscribed ‘Till we meet again’. Villers-Bretonneux is a village which lies on the N29 road from Amiens to St Quentin. 473 casualties are buried here.
He is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Saviour’s Church in Raynes Park.
