Walter Hassall was the eldest son of Walter Thomas and Emily Sarah Strutt who had married on the 1st May 1892. He was baptized at St James Church in Bermondsey with his brother Herbert Leonard on the 7th July 1897. The baptismal record reveals that their father was employed as a painter and that the family resided at 22 Madras Road in Bermondsey, London.

The 1901 Census reveals that the Stratfords were still living at 22 Madras Road in Bermondsey with Sarah’s parents and their extended family, also that their son-in-law, Walter Thomas was now a widower living with his two sons with Sarah’s parents.

0n November 25th 1906, Walter Thomas had married 21 year old Emily Reich at St Phillip’s Church in Camberwell, London.

The 1911 Census reveals that Walter Thomas and Emily had been married for 6 years and that the couple had 3 children and that the family now resided at 1 Lime Tree Villas in Church Road, Mitcham.

Walter Hassall was now 16 years old and was now employed as gas worker, labourer employed at the local gas works and living with his family.

Walter Hassall’s service record is not available through Ancestry. He served as a L /Corporal with G Company, 17th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers and died on the 21st January 1919 and is buried at Mitcham Church Road burial ground.
