Additional Information
Percy was born in 1895, and baptised at Mitcham Parish Church on the 2nd of February, 1896. He was the son of Arthur David and Martha Ann Jessup; his father worked as a bricklayer, but died before 1901, when Percy was still very young. He was the baby of the family, with two older brothers, Albert and Arthur, and two older sisters, Frances and Margaret.
In 1901, Percy was living with his siblings and their widowed mother at 27 Queens Road Mitcham but by 1911 only Arthur and Percy were still living at home and they had moved to a three room house with their mother at 3 Sarah’s Place. Arthur worked as a house painter, and a 15 year old Percy was a golf caddy.
Percy served with the Royal Sussex Regiment for about two weeks before transferring to the Royal Fusiliers, when he remained until dying of wounds sustained on the Somme.
