The 1891 Census reveals that Martha had been widowed and that Martha was employed as a laundress while she brought up her 2 sons, 14 year old Frederick and 8 year old Douglas. The family now resided 3 Ravensbury Cottages in Mitcham, Surrey.

According to the 1911 Census, Martha had been widowed over 40 years and was living with her youngest son Douglas at Kingdene Cottage at Lower Green in Mitcham. Douglas was now employed as a house painter.

Douglas enlisted in the Royal Sussex regiment in Croydon; his service record is not available through Ancestry. He was killed in action on the 30th June 1916. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
