Wimbledon Recruitment Offices opened in September 1915, and the first volunteers were allocated to "A" Battery with the Royal Field Artillery and given Army Service Numbers prefixed with "L" for local. Towards the end of September, volunteers were assigned to "C" Battery including Gunner Albert Bentley. In the early days training and drill had taken place on Wimbledon common, but by the end of November “Wimbledon’s Own” had moved to Waterloo Barracks, Aldershot.
