This page of Alfred Elgood's service record shows the time he spent serving with the Royal Field Artillery. Unfortunately, he was discharged after only three months, as he was seen as "not likely to become an efficient soldier;" however, he re-enlisted in a different regiment using the alias Alfred Totterdill, and successfully served for three years before being killed.
