Lionel Winnington Forde was reported missing on 8 June 1918. This letter, sent to his father nearly a year later, contains a report from a private who claimed to know him and heard he was killed by a shell. However, the man was not actually an eyewitness (and Lionel was only 19 when he was killed, rather than 24 as the private claimed), so the Army was unable to accept this claim, although they were prepared to declare Lionel officially dead.
