12th London Regiment War Diary - This is an account of the last known movements of Major Lewis Farewell Jones who was killed on the first day of the Somme on 1st July 1916.

Extract From The Rangers Historical Records:
“The left company (D), was held up by uncut wire in front of the German line and came under enfilade fire from a machine gun on their left.... Maj Jones, leading the remains of the fourth wave, about eight in number, attempted to rush a twenty-yard gap in the wire whilst the Lewis gun team, also just arrived, opened fire on the German bombers from two shell holes. Maj Jones fell wounded about two yards in front of the enemy's parapet...“
