YMCA Hut, Wimbledon Camp
Additional Information
This wintertime view shows the YMCA Hut built to house the recreation facilities for the troops on Wimbledon Common.
Patriotic fervour and welfare concerns led to many religious organisations to compete for the honour of providing entertainment and moral guidance to the troops.
However it was the non-sectarian “Young Men’s Christian Association” which proved the most enduring. In addition to the Camp Hut clubs, rooms were available at the YMCA in Worple Road and the Victoria Institute.
