Richard Rumsby was born 16 May 1894 and his parents were Ernest and Sally Rumsby of Alwyne Road, Wimbledon.

Richard was educated first at Greshams School , Holt, Norfolk and then at Kings College School Wimbledon. He was attested on 8th September 1914 in Chichester and posted to the 11th Service Bn, The Rifle Brigade as a private on 21st of that month. He was promoted to Corporal on 17th November 1914 and to Sergeant in June 1915.

He transferred to Officer Cadet training at Caxton Hall on 7th August 1916, and was commissioned on 28th September 1916. As a 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Sussex Regiment he won the Military Cross as noted in the London Gazette of 16th August 1917
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a mopping-out party, he did valuable work in support of the leading company, afterwards displaying great skill and initiative in making reconnaissances and collecting men who had gone astray. He has done similar excellent work on previous occasions.”

He died when “Controls shot away by enemy action and spun near aerodrome on landing from photography. 2Lt L de V Wiener (observer) injured.” His war grave is at Huby St Leu British Cemetery Pas de Calais.
