Robert Lawrence was the son of Edwin and Susannah Lawrence. He had four siblings, Edgar, Ivy, Winifred and Millicent.
As a family they lived at 51 Clive Road, Norwood, London. His father Edwin worked as an Outfitter circa 1891, and then as a Cycle Agent circa 1911. In the 1911 census Robert was noted as working as a Library Assistant, his older brother Edgar as a Sub Librarian, Ivy as completing domestic works, Winifred as a Postal Telegraphist and Millicent as an apprentice.
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
