His parents were Herbert John Albert Little and Laura Amy Dowling. He had 3 siblings, George, Lillian and Gladys. On the 22nd February 1895 he was baptised in the Parish of St. Clements, Barnsbury.
In 1901 the family was living in Newington, London, by 1911 they had moved to 33a Khartoum Road, Tooting, Wandsworth. In 1911 at the age of 16 Herbert was working as an office boy at a photographers.
