Additional Information

Herbert John Fountain was the son of William and Jennie Fountain. He was born in Paddington in December 1882. He lived at 41 Falcon Street Wandsworth, attending Mantua Street School, which he joined in December 1890, aged 8. By 1901, he was living with his family at “Abbeyside” in Tooting Graveney. His father was an oil and colour man (employed in the paint manufacturing trade, mixing pigmented paints) and Herbert appeared to work at the family trade as well, at least from the age of 18. They had one servant, and Herbert may have been an only child.

On August 30, 1911, he married Daisy Margaret Jeffery, from Fulham, at St. Luke’s, Kensington. He was living at 132 Fenborough Road in Kensington at the time of his marriage.

Herbert enlisted in Whitehall. He was a driver in the 661st Company Army Service Corps which was formed in April 1916. This was an ASC Horse Transport Depot Company which filled a variety of administrative, recruitment, induction, training and re-supply roles. The Base Depots were based in the United Kingdom or at the port of entry to a theatre of war. Advanced Depots were located further up the lines of communication. The 661st Company was formed in April 1916. It was a Reserve Depot based at Park Royal.

Herbert died in the military hospital in Woolwich. According to an index-only record on Ancestry, he was residing in Wimbledon at the time of his death, address unknown. His grave registration report form records that he was the husband of Daisy Margaret Fountain, of "Chatelet," Durrington, Worthing. He is buried in Morden Cemetery. Grave 4084G.
