Additional Information
Born in Morden c.1899, Edwin was the son of Edwin and Kate Greenway. By 1901 the couple also had a younger daughter, Elsie and the family were living at 5, Merton High Street. Edwin’s father was a carpenter in a local paper mill (possibly Reed’s Mill, which was situated nearby).
Edwin junior was 15 when war broke out and was obviously keen to do his bit, as he left school and found employment as a munitions worker at the Wandsworth Engineering works on Wandsworth High Street. By June 1916, having reached the age of 17 he enlisted in the army, joining the 19th Battalion of the London Regiment.
Edwin’s commitment to King and Country can be seen from his military record. He saw action in North Africa but was wounded in action on 15 December 1917. As a result he was discharged from the military on 1 March 1918, only to re-join in June 1918. He returned to the UK with his unit in January 1920 and was discharged again in February of that year.
Edwin is listed as having received the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and Star. He died in 1925 aged 26.
