George was born in Breedon in Leicestershire on May 16th 1887. He joined the Grenadier guards at the age of 20 in 1907. By the time of the 1911 census, he was based at St. Georges Barracks in Hanover Square in London, and had attained the rank of Lance Corporal.
He was taken prisoner during fighting with the 3rd battalion. It is not known when, but he died from a lung infection while a prisoner of war and was one of only 8 commonwealth soldiers buried in Fourmies Cemetery.
He is also commemorated at St. Lawrence’s Church, Morden, where his name appears on one of the panels in the Lychgate which serves as the parish war memorial.
