Ernest George Clarke was born in 1896 to Frank William and Louisa Clarke in Fulham. They lived at 58 Ferrier Street in Wandsworth. His service record shows that in civilian life he was a qualified printer prior to enlistment on the 6th May 1913 for 4 years. Records describe him as being 5ft 11ins tall with a red complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair.

He trained as a machine gunner and was posted to Malta for 6 months in May 1914 before being recalled home for 2 month. From February 1915 to May 191, he served in France, but he was sent back home as being medically unfit for active service.

Ernest George Clarke was thought to have contracted Pulmonary TB around Xmas in 1913 London. His condition was aggravated by active service, according to the Medical Board 14.5.1915. He was discharged according to King’s regulations 392, para XVI as no longer fit for active service
