George Edwin Collingham was born in Chelsea in 1885 to Edward Collingham, a scaffolder. The family lived at 14 Paradise Walk, in Chelsea. After leaving school, at the age of 22 years while he was employed as a carman, he married Bertha Harvey who was 21 years old at Christchurch, Chelsea. Bertha's father was Walter John Harvey.
The couple lived at 27 Spencer Street in Battersea where they had three children, George Walter who was born 10/10/1905 at Chelsea, Albert Edward, born 9/11/1906 also at Chelsea and a daughter Alice May Harriet on 23/11/1908.
George Collingham was 31 years and 5 months old when he enlisted on 7th May 1917. His occupation was Motor bus driver. Records show that he was a small man only 5ft 3 1/2 tall and weighed only 112lbs. He was issued a full kit on enlistment.
While on 14 days leave from France, on the 5/11/1918, he became dangerously ill and comatose and was admitted to 2nd London General Hospital, ward 2, bed 11 in Chelsea SW. Medical case notes reveal his treatment prior to his death from Influenza and bronchopneumonia on 7 November 1918 age 33 . His base at Woolwich Dockyard was notified of his death on the 8th November 1918.
His brother-in-law, Walter J Harvey settled his estate on behalf of his sister and Mrs Collingham was awarded a pension of 13s 9p for herself and her three children
