The 1891 Channel Isles Census reveals that Edwin John de la Haye was born on Jersey to John de la Haye who at that time was a 37 year old carpenter and his mother Margarita a 42 year old dressmaker. The couple had a total of 4 children.

He enlisted at the age of 25 while living at 202 Euston Road London. His height was described as being 5ft 51/2” tall and his occupation was described as a blacksmith. His next of kin was thought to be his sister Eva de la Haye who lived at Alfriston House in Jersey.

Service records show a couple of AWOL Absent With Out Leave on 2 occasions. Upon further investigation, medical records reveal that he contracted a West African Disease in 1906 apparently he served in the South Africa Campaign, where malaria was diagnosed and his last bout of malaria was recorded on the 9th August 1918, where upon he was certified as not being fit for a theatre of war where malaria was present.

Edwin John claimed for a disability pension on 6th December 1916, medical records show that he had swelling of both legs and pain was disturbing his sleep at night. Eventually he was diagnosed with sarcoma (cancer) of his hip which resulted in a 100% disability.

He was discharged from Military Service on 1.4.1919 due to disability according to Paragraph 392 (XVI)KG to 15 St Phillip Street in Battersea
He married a Bertha Eliza Vincent on 24th June 1918 a 22 year old spinster at All Saints Church in Battersea. By then his father was deceased.
He died in Wandsworth on the 18th December 1919 and is buried at Morden Cemetery in Garth Road.
