Herbert Ayers was born on 20 November 1893 in West Norwood. By the outbreak of war in 1914, his parents, Percy and Sarah, had moved to Morden and were living in a property called Cleveancy at 6 Wandle Road.
Herbert joined the Navy and became a sailmaker on H.M.S Natal. Tragically he was killed just before New Year’s Eve 1915, when the ship suffered an internal combustion and blew up in Scotland’s Cromarty Firth.
Herbert’s body was never recovered but he is commemorated at St. Lawrence’s Church, Morden, where his name appears on one of the panels in the Lychgate.
