Robert was the son of Francis and Cecilia Briner and was born in Greenwich on 16 July 1900. He had two older brothers, Frank and Edwin, a sister Maud and a younger brother, Albert. His father was a Railway Signalman and in 1911 the family was living in Brockley. He attended Waller Road School, Lewisham, from the age of 5.
Robert joined the Kings Royal Rifles, service number 63144. He died on 4 April 1919 and his place of death is recorded as Sutton, Surrey. He was buried in Morden Cemetery.
