John Keates was born in Richmond in 1874 to Charles and Louisa Keates. He became a plasterer and married Irene Mary Cox on 5th August 1900. They had four children, Richard, Irene, Annie and Emily.
John was 40 years old when he enlisted in the Army Service Corps on 20 September 1915, giving his address as 4 Grove Mews, Grove Road, Richmond.
He died on 17 February 1919 and is buried in Morden Cemetery.
