Edward was the fifth child of butcher John Knight and his wife Anne. He was baptised at St. Mary’s church in August 1893. His father was born and raised in Tooting, before moving to Merton during the late Victorian era. On leaving school, Edward had several jobs and was working as a fishmonger when he enlisted at Wimbledon in January 1915, aged 22.
His unit was sent to the Western Front during the latter part of 1915. In 1916 the men fought in several battles on the Somme.
Edward died from wounds in October 1916, after being taken to the 44th casualty clearing station. This was located next to Puchevillers Cemetery and it was here that he was buried. His gravestone has the words “Gone but Not Forgotten” at the request of his father. Edward is also commemorated at St. Mary’s church in Merton Park.
