John Lane was born in East Ham on 11 October 1899 to William Lane and Maud (nee Rigby) and grew up at 81 Edna Road, Raynes Park with his siblings Gertrude, Arthur and Horace.
His father enlisted in August 1915 aged 45 then John joined up in May 1917 and was sent to France. During 1918, John’s regiment took part in the First and Second Battles of the Somme and, in September, the Battle of the Hindeberg Line. While it is not known where he was injured, he died of wounds on 19 September 1918.
His war gratuity of £5 17s 9d was paid to his mother at his father’s request. John is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard Communal Cemetery Extension and British cemetery.
