Additional Information
Arthur Nesling was born on 10 January 1871 in Wangford Suffolk. His mother’s name was Lucille and he had older siblings Hugh, Evelyn, Herbert and Clarrie.
He joined the Navy as a Gunner and married Ella in the autumn of 1900. They lived in Devonport then moved to Portsmouth before settling in Blenheim Road, Raynes Park. He was promoted to Chief Gunner, then Lieutenant in 1910 and finally to Lieutenant Commander. His last ship was HMS Seahorse which was based at Portsmouth and used as a Fleet Tug and Rescue Ship. However, he was retired as medically unfit on 30 November 1916.
Arthur’s death on 23 March 1920 was registered in Croydon, and he left £926 17s 3d to his widow.
There is a memorial to him in Brookwood Cemetery, near Woking, shared with other Naval personnel, Lt. Commander Andrew Yule Catto, and Wing Commander Frank Arthur Brock. Arthur is thought to be the only one actually buried there.
