Douglas was born on the Isle of Wight in the early part of 1896. His father, Edward, worked for Sandown City Council as a Carter. His mother’s name was Anne and Douglas was the youngest child. In 1901 the family - Polly, Fred, Thomas, Teddy, Douglas and their parents were all living in Avenue Road, Sandown IoW.

By 1911 there had been big changes in the family and Douglas and his father shared their Avenue Road home with Edward’s son in law William Hayter, his wife Nora who appears to be Douglas’s sister but was not mentioned in 1901 census, and their two children. By now, Douglas is an Errand Boy.

Douglas enlisted in August 1914 and gave his address as 19 St Mary’s Cottages, Merton Park. He joined the 7th Battalion of the East Surrey regiment. He fought in France and was killed in action at the Battle of Cambrai on 20 November 1917. He is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
