Born c.1892 in Mitcham, Frederick was the son of George and Eliza Bass. His father was a bricklayer. By 1911 the family was living at 39 Fortescue Road, Merton with George’s widowed sister-in-law, Alice Jeffrey and her two children, a boy and a girl. Eighteen year old Frederick, who was working as a bricklayer’s labourer in a smelting works, didn’t have any siblings. On 25th December 1912, he married Rosetta Nicoli at Christ Church in Mitcham. They had a son called Walter Charles Bass.
Frederick enlisted into the East Surrey Regiment at Kingston on 31st August 1915. At this date he was still living at 39 Fortescue Road, Merton. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 1st July 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial which commemorates British and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 who have no known grave. He is also remembered on the Mitcham War Memorial.
