Born in Camden Town, London on 8 November 1895, Herbert was the son of grocer’s assistant Herbert Hempstead and his wife, Sarah. He was baptised in Aldershot on 30 September 1900, together with his younger sister, Irene.
In 1901 the family was living at 49 Albert Road, Aldershot. However by 1911 they had moved to Ranelagh Road, Pimlico. Herbert snr was now working as a Warehouse Foreman and his 15 year old son was working as a Warehouse Assistant for a company that made instruments for Drawing Offices and Surveyors.
Herbert Jnr volunteered in December 1914 when he was just 18. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment and in June 1915 was drafted to the Western front, He took part in various engagements including Loos, St Eloi and Albert. He was wounded at Loos in 1915 and again at Albert in 1916. He was sent home and died in Millbank Hospital on 12 September 1916 and is buried at Streatham Park Cemetery, Rowan Road, Mitcham.
