Additional Information
Born in Camden Town, London on 8 November 1895, Herbert was the son of grocer’s assistant Herbert Hempstead and his wife, Sarah. He was baptised in Aldershot on 30 September 1900, together with his younger sister, Irene.
In 1901 the family was living at 49 Albert Road, Aldershot. However by 1911 they had moved to Ranelagh Road, Pimlico. Herbert snr was now working as a Warehouse Foreman and his 15 year old son was working as a Warehouse Assistant, possibly at the same premises.
During the First World War, Herbert jnr served with the 5th battalion, Middlesex Regiment, also known as ‘The Duke of Cambridge’s Own’ . This was a UK based reserve battalion with a depot and training unit based in Chatham. Herbert enlisted on 29 June 1915 and his medal index card refers to him having been posted to France, so he may have spent some time serving with a different battalion.
Herbert died of an unspecified disease on 12 September 1916 and is buried at Streatham Park Cemetery, Rowan Road, Mitcham.
