Born in Wimbledon c.1894, Harold was the middle child of George and Julia Eggleton. The couple had two older children, Hubert and Evelyn, plus three younger offspring – Leslie, Edith and Constance. The family lived at 92 Cromwell Road, Wimbledon and George Eggleton was a civil servant employed at the Probate Registry Office, Somerset House.
By the age of 16, Harold had a job as a junior clerk for a clock company. He enlisted in February 1915, and was killed in Flanders less than two months later.
