Charles was born in about 1894 to Thomas Jackson and Louisa Ellen Mackness, and baptised on the 31 March, 1895 at Wimbledon Parish Church. His father was the proprietor of the Wimbledon Hill Hotel, located at 24 High Street, where the family also lived. The hotel had 25 rooms, including the family’s living quarters – it appears to have accommodated around 10 guests, on average. Charles’s paternal aunt and uncle also assisted in the running of the hotel.
Charles had two sisters; Mary Francis, who was two years older than him, and Hilda Louise, who was eight years younger.
Charles attended the All Souls Collegiate School in Hampstead.
He entered active service on the 5 November, 1914, serving in Egypt and he died aboard the hospital ship HMHS Gloucester Castle of wounds sustained at Suvla Bay, leaving £225 to his father.
