Cecil was born on the 13 September 1897 to Thomas George and Cecilia Lily Mason, and baptised on the 1st of November at Wimbledon Parish Church. His father was a grocer, with a shop called Mason’s Stores located at 54 High Street, Wimbledon. The property included 12 rooms, where the family lived. The shop had been passed down through a few generations of Masons, and Cecil’s grandfather appears to have run the first post office in Wimbledon. Cecil had two older brothers, Herbert, an engineering student, and Thomas, and a younger sister, Vera.

Cecil attended Margate College, and initially joined the military as a Trooper in the 2nd City of London Yeomanry, service number 2859. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on the 27 September, 1917, and became a flying officer for the RAF on the 5 January, 1918. He was reported as missing on the 21 April, 1918, but wasn’t officially declared dead until 1919.
