He had three older sisters, Elizabeth, Alice, and Ellen. The family lived at 8 Lancaster Cottages, on Lancaster Road in Wimbledon.
Robert married Beatrice Fox on the 4 August, 1906, when he was 24. Robert had been working at least since the age of 18, when he was an enquiry clerk, though by the time of his marriage, he was an assistant salesman at a furniture and trunk retailer. After their marriage, Robert and Beatrice moved into a three room house at 8 Park View Gardens in Southfields, and had a daughter, Dorothy Beatrice, who was born in about 1908.
Robert enlisted in July 1916. At the time of his death he was serving in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC).
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) was a corps of the British Army. The 110th Company was a unit within the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, responsible for supply, maintenance, and logistical support to the British Army. In the supply area it had responsibility for weapons, armoured vehicles and other military equipment, ammunition and clothing and certain minor functions such as laundry, mobile baths and photography. The RAOC was also responsible for a major element of the repair of Army equipment.
Robert died on 25 November 1918, and is buried in the Janval Cemetery, Dieppe. His headstone reads "UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS" chosen by his family.
