Additional Information

Alick was born in October 1897 in Wallington, Surrey to Thomas and Emily Duncan and was baptised on 12 December at Holy Trinity Church, Wallington. He was the second youngest of five, with older sisters Elsie, Lilias, and Flora and younger brother Stuart. His father worked as a secretary to public companies, and the family lived in a substantial eight room house at 10 Rosemount, in Wallington.

In June 1915, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. During the First World War Duncan left his job as a clerk at the bank's Sutton branch to join the army, becoming a Second Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment.

His father Thomas died in August 1916 and only six months later Alick was killed in Belgium on 2 March by an enemy sniper. He was just 19 years old. His death is recorded in the battalion's War Diary.

Alick is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium, and is commemorated on the Mitcham War Memorial.
