Henry Charles Holmes was born in Stoke Newington and became a builder. By the time his son Henry Clive was born, he and his wife Mary were living at 2 Ledbury Villas, Caterham.
Henry Clive was born in Addiscombe, Croydon, on 20 August 1897 and baptised in St Luke’s Church, Caterham on 7 November 1897
By the 1901 census the family were living in a six room house called Fernlea in Glossop Road, Sanderstead along with a 14 year old servant called Kate Slater and Henry Charles described himself as a “Working Builder”. During the next couple of years, Henry Clive’s younger brothers Arthur and Norman were born.
The 1911 census shows the family still living at Fearnlea but Mary is not on the census. Kate Slater has left and Henry Charles is employing a housekeeper Flora Scott who lives there with her five year old daughter Shelah. Henry Charles goes on to marry Flora in 1923.
Very little is known about Henry Clive’s military career. He enlisted on 29 November 1915 in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, served overseas aged 21 and was discharged on 6 December 1918.
He died on 15 June 1919 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
