Additional Information
Edward was born on the 24th of May, 1888, to Joseph and Ann Ingham. He was baptised at St. Alselm’s in Streatham a month later, as Edwin William, but he seems to have preferred Edward, as that is the name he used when he entered the military. His father worked as a gardener and a bricklayer’s labourer, but died at some point between 1901 and 1911. His mother and some of his sisters worked as laundresses. After his father’s death, his mother and the four children still living at home, including Edward, moved from 13 Ravensbury Cottages in Mitcham to 8 Allen’s Terrace, Church Road, to live with her brother (Edward’s uncle), who worked as a nurseryman. Edward had nine siblings in all, and was a middle child.
Edward worked as a market gardener prior to the war, and married Grace Violet Simpson in 1914. He enlisted in Kingston, and was killed in action.
