Charles was born in Newington, London in about 1898, to Charles and Florence Kennedy. His father was Scottish, and worked as a grocery clerk, for a firm that sold wholesale provisions. He was the oldest child, and had two younger brothers, Albert and Stanley. By 1911, the family had moved from Brixton to a six room house on 49 Ashbourne Road in Mitcham.
Charles was killed in action in France in 1917, and is buried in the Wancourt British Cemetery, France. His mother Florence was entitled to receive his last pay of £6.1.4 plus the War Gratuity of £3.00
