Additional Information

Alfred was born to parents Alfred Robert Eungblut and Jane maria (nee Cockman). At aged 4 he was registered at Burghley Road School in Camden. When war broke out in 1914, Alfred was 20 years of age. He was employed by his father in the musical instrument (Piano forte) tuning and repairing business.

The first military service Act was introduced in Jan 1916 for conscription for single men aged between the ages of 18-40. Alfred appears to have been a Conscientious objector to the war and in May 1916 claimed exemption from military service, but his request was refused.

He absconded but gave himself up on 12th September 1916. He was then court martialled and sentenced to 2 years hard labour.

By November 1916 Alfred was certified insane and sent to Long Grove Lunatic Asylum where he remained till his death. Friends claimed Alfred had been driven insane by the ill treatment at the hands of the military. Alfred died of heart failure on 11th June 1917 aged 23, whilst still a patient at the Long Grove Asylum, in Epsom.

He was buried at Morden Cemetery and, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records his name on a Screen Wall.

Records show that Alfred’s parents and family changed their surname in August 1917 from Eungblut to Rogers.
