Leonard was born on 20 July 1894 in Wimbledon and baptised in Holy Trinity Church on 5 September 1894.
Harry, his father, was a builder/decorator. His mother's name was Elizabeth and he had an older brother Ernest and a younger sister Hilda. Harry and Elizabeth had another daughter, Gertrude, who died young.
Leonard grew up in Wimbledon. In 1901 the family lived at 42 Hartfield Road and in 1911 they were at 80 Merton Road. The house in Merton Road was quite large with 9 rooms and the family had a "boarder", Miss Isabelle Kerr, who was an Elementary Teacher.
Leonard attended Rutlish School.
He enlisted in August 1914, at which time he was 20 years old, 5ft 9.75ins tall and weighed 153lb. His eyes were brown and his hair black. He had been working as a clerk.
He joined the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
Leonard died of wounds on 15 September 1916 and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery.
