Thomas was born on 6 January 1896 in Wimbledon to Thomas Frederick and Annie Warner. He was baptised at All Saints Church in South Wimbledon on 29 January. The family lived in a six room house at 78 Haydons Road, and on the 1911 census, had taken in a boarder. Thomas was an only child, and he attended Rutlish School. His father worked as a bricklayer.
Thomas joined the East Surreys, and was killed in action on 16 August 1916. His father appears to have passed away by then, as his mother is listed as his sole legatee.
