Horace Frederick was the third son of John and Lucy Stopher. His father John, who was a cattle dealer, had moved from Suffolk to Mitcham by 1881, where he met and married Lucy Hilliard in 1891 at Christ Church in Mitcham. Horace Frederick was born in the second quarter of 1895 and baptized on the 26th May 1895 at Mitcham.
The 1911 Census, reveals that his mother Lucy Hilliard Stopher was now a widow, her husband, John had died in January 1900. At the age of 17 years, Horace Frederick was now employed as a grocer’s assistant in Mitcham.
Horace Frederick enlisted on the 8th June 1915 at Kingston upon Thames into the East Surrey Regiment. His service record reveals that he was 5ft 10 ins tall and weighed 132 lbs at the time of enlistment he was employed as a labourer. He served in France from the 8th December 1915

His service record reveals that Horace Frederick was injured on the 1st April and he died from injuries to his hip and left leg at 10pm on the 8th April 1916 at British General Hospital in Calais.
His mother Lucy, lost two sons to the Great War, Albert Frank Stopher, was also killed in the war and is commemorated on the Mitcham War Memorial.
