Ralph Hamon Weeley Upton, who was born in 1899, was the second son of George Rupert Thomas Upton and Margaret Eleanor Tomkin. His parent had married in the third quarter of 1893 at Samford.
Ralph was baptised in August 1897 at the parish church of St Peter and Paul in Mitcham. The baptismal record reveals that his father was a barrister at law. The family resided at Northolm, St Georges Road in Mitcham.
The 1901 Census reveals that the Upton family of five still resided at Northolm with their 3 servants

The 1911 Census shows that George and Margaret had been married for 17 years. The couple who still resided at Northolm, had a total of 4 children, one of had died in infancy. 0nly their 11 year old daughter was still living at home. George and Margaret still employed 3 servants. Forty eight year old George Upton was still employed as a barrister at law.
The 1911 Census reveals that George and Margaret’s two sons are attending boarding school at Haileybury College in Hertford.
De Ruvigny’s Roll 0f Honour 1914-1919 details that Ralph educational achievements as well as enjoying both cricket and football in 1915 before serving as a sergeant major in the 0TC at Selwyn College, Cambridge.
Ralph enlisted and was gazetted as a 2nd lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment on the 11th August 1916. He served with the Expeditionary force in France. During operations on the Somme, he was killed by a sniper during an attack south east of Arras and buried where he fell; his men erected a rough cross with his name on it. His grave has been lost but he is commemorated at Wancourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais. Special Memorial 22.
