Additional Information

William George who was the eldest son of George Henry and Charlotte Vallis. His 23 year old parents had married at St Mark’s Church, Woodgreen in Middlesex on the 24th June 1894. His father George Henry was employed as a carman while his mother was employed as a laundry maid.

William George was born in Streatham in 1894 and baptized at St Albans Parish church at Streatham Park. The baptismal record reveals the George Henry was still employed as a carman and that the family now resided at 55 Thrale Road in Streatham. He was thought to have attended Eardley Road School in Streatham.

The 1901 Census reveals that George Henry was now employed as a tram driver, at the time George Henry and Charlotte now had a total of 4 children and the family now resided at 155 Leigham Court buildings at Streatham Hill.

The 1911 Census places the family at 191 Franciscan Road in Tooting, with George and Charlotte had been married for 17 years and now had a family of 8 surviving children. George Henry who was now 41 years old was still employed as a tram driver with London County Council while his eldest son 16 year old William George was now employed as an errand boy at a boat yard.

William George’s military service record is not available through Ancestry, although he enlisted in Wimbledon as a rifleman in the London rifles and was killed in action on the 8th 0ctober 1916.

Warlencourt, the Butte de Warlencourt and Eaucourt-L'Abbaye were the scene of very fierce fighting in 1916. Eaucourt was taken by the 47th (London) Division early in October was attacked by that and other divisions, but it was not relinquished by the Germans until the following 26 February, when they withdrew to the Hinden20burg Line.
